Press Releases Mar 28, 2024 AAPI Data Celebrates Historic Update to Federal Standards on the Collection of RaceEthnicity Data Earlier today, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) announced changes to the federal government’s race and ethnicity standards, under Special Policy Directive 15 (or SPD 15) that will mandate all federal agencies to collect detailed information on specific communities. This is a major development for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, as many in the community are currently rendered invisible in federal data, and accordingly not represented in sound policy and programming. The last time a change was made to these standards was in 1997, and CAPAC as well as community advocates have pushed tirelessly for improvements in data collections that recognize the importance of diversity within our communities. While the updated directive represents important progress, the federal government must strengthen its mechanisms for successful implementation.
